Elie Saab latest collection took to the runway at Paris Haute Couture Fall Winter 2016/17 was called “Impressions of New York” and it was inspired by the American city and its famous skyline, with a very special and sensitive twist.
The stylist described the collection on Twitter as “alluring and accentuated femininity reveals the influence of mid-century silhouettes”, but it was much more than that.
There are at least 3 reasons – that are basically the 3 stylist’s main source of inspiration – why the Elie Saab show has been absolutely amazing, let’s discover more starting from the last one:
3. The powerful echo of Forties’ magnificence – that is recalled through the entire collection making use of many details taken from the mythic style of actresses like Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich and Ava Gardner superbly tackled in a contemporary way.
2. The clear reference to the “European Families” arrived in America during Forties and Fifties – when they were immigrants.
It happened at that time they’ve been defined the “immigrants of luxury”, but it was of course not always the case. Immigration is – and it has always been – a complex and often painful phenomenon.
Elie Saab showed the “European Family” concept through the “Mommy & Me” show: 55 pieces of matching dresses for both adults and children. Ethereal gowns were modeled by women and little girls – mothers and daughters – with similar skin tone and hair color.
Models walked down the runway with their exact mini look-alikes.
1. The symbolism that dominates the entire show – and that can be easily found in every gowns, just looking a little bit closer.
As it has been declared by Elie Saab himself he used birds – as detail in many dresses – because “each season they pass from one place to another, they are a bit like immigrants”.

Our perspective is that this impressive collection demonstrates how beauty, fashion, haute couture and luxury can also be effective means to share positive and sensitive messages in times of troubles.
Immigrants are not the evil. We’ve been immigrants too. Many of us at least, maybe all of us. But we all live in this world and, as the birds, we should be free to move from one place to another if the season is becoming dangerous for our own survival.
America welcomed the European Families in Forties and Fifties for them to be free to have another chance in life. And they got that chance.
And that’s what immigration means to this Elie Saab collection: giving and receiving the priceless chance to be free.
Like the birds.
